"Heeey, you've reached Yang! Well, actually, you didn't reach far enough, 'cause I'm not here right now! But don't yang up! Just leave a message on this baby, and I'll get back to you soon enough, okay?"
[If it has a gun attached to it, chances are it was 100% Ruby's idea. Not that it's a bad idea according to Hiro. But then again it's not like Ruby has a lot of bad ideas anyway according to Hiro. He puts up with the hair ruffling a bit before bringing up the hand not holding the ice to swat at her, chuckling to himself as he adjusts the icepack on his jaw.]
Good thing I have the best teacher then. We'll pick this up soon and start really working on offensive strategy once I nail the defense. If I can hold my own against you? I have no reason to worry about anybody else.
Weeeell, maybe next time, I'll hit a little harder. [ But she'll also talk to Ruby about unlocking his aura, laughing now as she draws her hand back. It's good to know that he isn't fazed (much) by her leaving him a special package of bruises to remember this training by. ]
[Unlocking his aura's a great idea and one he'll be grateful for later. Right now he's still shaking off the hits and stretching out again to relieve sore muscles.]
You might be a little late for that. [Even he can admit when he's getting a little too cocky, at least to people he's comfortable around.] But hit as hard as you want. I'm not scared. Just don't break anything because Tadashi would probably get mad.
That's all I ask. [There's a short exhale.] I should probably get back to him anyway. But...we'll do this again really soon and keep going. For longer, even. Okay?
Definitely! Hopefully by then I'll have part of the gunblade put together. Maybe we can test it out, too. [Hiro that's in like three days and then you're being transported to the jungle. But whatever.]
...oh. I said I'd give you credits for the lessons. How much do you want? [He's trying to be a man of his word at least.]
Yup. Showed up out of nowhere and apparently didn't like us. Maris didn't look too worried about it, but he didn't do anything when some of us fought it off, either.
[Naoki's face has been fixed into a rigid expression since Ruby and Yang got back. He's glad that neither of them can sense emotions like he can, because the last thing he would've wanted was for them to pick up on his (though he thinks there were more important things on both of their minds). The spike of dread when he'd first saw them, terror, worry, regret, but he didn't let himself show that.
Instead, he hurried to help them inside, tend to both of them (thanking Lucifer, bastard that he was, for giving him a body that was capable of using healing spells).
Now he mills outside of Yang's door, hesitant to go in in case she's sleeping. Eventually, he slides his hand carefully between the door and its frame to ease it open, to slip inside with a soft tread.]
[ She's not asleep. She almost wishes she was, for how often the memories are rushing through her mind. And she's tired, no doubt about that, but she's also sitting (sort of, half-slumped) back against her pillows and gingerly touching her arm. It's healed now, thanks to Naoki, but again, the memory's still so fresh that it's almost overwhelming.
[Naoki slips inside, shutting the door behind him and frowning. He crosses the room to her, stopping at the side of the bed as his gaze drops down to her arm.] Does it still hurt?
No, it's... just like it never happened, honestly. [ But it did. The slightly tormented look on her face is proof of that. She's glad Naoki didn't get caught up in the fight, that he'd stayed here and been safe, but the more selfish part of her wonders if things would have gone differently if she'd had him by her side. ]
[Naoki lowers himself down on the edge of the bed, reaching over to sweep his fingertips gently along her arm. He hasn't asked what happened since they got back. He doesn't ask it now.
Instead he touches her, shifts himself closer as though to tell her that he's here now. The look on her face tears at something in him.]
[ ... She's worrying him. And worse, she can't exactly reassure him. Even if she tried to smile, he'd just take his cues from her emotions, and Yang sighs, chagrined. ]
Naoki, I... [ She drifts her fingers down to graze his, swallowing hard. ] I wasn't able to protect... as much as I wanted to. Some Huntress, huh?
[Naoki turns his hand, until he's catching at her fingers-- and then he interlaces them, squeezing her hand. He gazes down at their hands as those words resonate in him, making him remember all of the instances in which he couldn't...
He never wanted her to have to feel anything like he did. His fingers tighten with hers and he brings her hand up to him, pressing it against his chest.]
Yang, [and his voice is firm,] you tried. You did what you could. You can't blame yourself for that.
[He can only say that because they're words that she gave to him first. He can think differently and return the words to her now thanks to her. Even though he never wanted to say them to her like this, never wanted for there to be a situation like this for her.]
Did I? I keep thinking, if I'd moved faster, if I'd thought a little more-- I mean-- [ Her voice grows tight, and her fingers fold over his, trembling just enough to convey that she's really not all right at all. ]
I know thinking like that is pointless, but I can't seem to stop!
