"Heeey, you've reached Yang! Well, actually, you didn't reach far enough, 'cause I'm not here right now! But don't yang up! Just leave a message on this baby, and I'll get back to you soon enough, okay?"
[Naoki's face has been fixed into a rigid expression since Ruby and Yang got back. He's glad that neither of them can sense emotions like he can, because the last thing he would've wanted was for them to pick up on his (though he thinks there were more important things on both of their minds). The spike of dread when he'd first saw them, terror, worry, regret, but he didn't let himself show that.
Instead, he hurried to help them inside, tend to both of them (thanking Lucifer, bastard that he was, for giving him a body that was capable of using healing spells).
Now he mills outside of Yang's door, hesitant to go in in case she's sleeping. Eventually, he slides his hand carefully between the door and its frame to ease it open, to slip inside with a soft tread.]
[ She's not asleep. She almost wishes she was, for how often the memories are rushing through her mind. And she's tired, no doubt about that, but she's also sitting (sort of, half-slumped) back against her pillows and gingerly touching her arm. It's healed now, thanks to Naoki, but again, the memory's still so fresh that it's almost overwhelming.
[THIS SAID after he urged her along to come training with him in the lot they have been training in ever since... well, since they met. Naoki's crouched on the ground, taking a breather even though he insisted on keeping their training session light today...
It was probably a mystery why, up until this moment...]
[ Naoki rarely had to do any insisting when it came to training, not when Yang tended to invite herself along anyway-- that had been the first indication that something was up. And then not wanting to go all out? Suspicious point #2.
Now, rubbing at a sore spot on her jaw, she blinks at him. ]
[ He wasn't conscious for the last leg of the trip out of the jungle, and he woke up an entire day later, on the 7th. He's been doing his best to check in with everyone, find out how they are... and Yang is near the top of his thoughts. Seeing her get hurt had been pretty chilling. He knows she's been taken care of by now, but he can't help but want to talk to her himself. ]
[ Her reply's pretty immediate. It's good to hear from him, and she's been wondering whether he'd be awake when she checked on him. At least that's one question answered. ]
[Sorry, Yang. There's an odd message being left for you today.]
I knew reaching out to a dame like Yang wasn't exactly fair. A guy like me, no one owed me anything. But she'd done us a solid, me and Hajime both. I knew she could be counted on.
[...he's narrating. Sorry. It's not going to stop. But that's only half of it.]
Sorry to call out of the blue, but I have to ask you a favor. I had to cut straight to the chase; time was something I was already running short on. I'd been running short on it for a long time, but my supply was finally all dried up. I don't have much time.
[So after this entire fiasco, and after the event comes to a close, Ruby goes to bed at her usual typical early hour (around 10 pm at the latest) because she is a growing girl.
And.
She goes to bed. It's totally fine. Now that the craziness is over, she can just sleep, and there are no libraries or zombies or weird acting books.
Though Hiro had been acting kind of odd too, right? He'd even said something weird though, like how Ruby would know when he was trying to be roma--
........................ Oh.
It clicks, quite suddenly, and then Ruby's burying her face in her hands because she doesn't know how to cope with this, because instead of making her feel awkward, it makes her heart beat faster (okay, that's a lie, it makes her feel awkward too, but what else is new), and she realizes that she kind of wants to know exactly what he meant by that and all of that is given voice with--]
Aaaaagh!
[Yes, seems legit. Eloquent too. Except then Zwei is barking because Ruby sounds distressed and yeah, they're being noisy tonight.]
[Perhaps Yang will recognize the voice of her fashionable partner in crime echoing from somewhere out in the distance... Ah, there he is now! Being carried up the sidewalk by a particularly determined hugbot, who is having absolutely no trouble at all with keeping this noodle from squirming free.]
I said put me down! I can tell you're in there, you know—! [He's talking to the ghost okay he can metaphorically see you, ghost.
Anyway, it seems like he needs a hand like a true moron.]
[ It's a good thing Yang's on the case! Because of course she recognizes the dulcet tones of her favorite sword, and she's already sprinting in his direction. And-- well. ]
[When the wall shatters, it's not the noise of it collapsing that Naoki notices, no-- he's not doing much, relaxing, book in hand (not turned off from reading despite the debacle from a little ago) when the sensations slam into him. It nearly erases his noticing the sound altogether. If he did notice, it's practically wiped from his mind.]
Ngkk...
[At once he's curling, coiling himself into a ball up with his hands clutching his head, squeezing it between his palms, braced to either side of it. His palms are crushed over his ears, as though he can block out the sudden sensations that overwhelm him. His eyes have gone wide, strained, pupils dilated into what look like slits, his breaths at once laboured and sounds choked in his throat.
He can't...!
It's bad enough if you can sense it. It's worse when your ability to sense the negative is so much stronger than the positive. He feels sick to his stomach, his head is whirling, the horn on the back of his neck feels hot, skin burning, this is too much--]
[ Yang doesn't notice it quite to the overwhelming extent that Naoki does-- honestly, what alerts her is his reaction, and she shifts Zwei quickly off her lap and hurrying over to where her boyfriend is curled in a panicky ball. ]
Naoki?! Hey!!
[ She's resting a hand on his back, rubbing anxiously, but not sure if this will actually help or not. What happened? ]
[ he's a bit uncomfortable about things, but after talking to jaune (even though it was a rather weird conversation), he feels like he owes yang a message. ]
[ FINALLY, the door swings open. He may have heard Zwei barking in the background, but there's Yang, totally unimpressed by Jaune's barrage of knocking. ]
[Things have definitely been getting dire-- what with there being no real good food around, Naoki slipped out earlier, leaving Pixie, Yurlungur and Long around the building that they're using for now. That and he can't stop thinking. He can't stop remembering. Every time he shuts his eyes, that's it, it's there. He came back after it happened utterly silent and he's been very quiet ever since because he can't.
Again. He couldn't do anything again. What use is this body of his, anyway?
Useful enough for catching food, at the very least. We'll not delve into Naoki's hunting exploits, but it involved explosions of energy and probably a bit more brutality than necessary. When he makes his way back toward the building, he's hauling along with him the majority of a crab... let's say crustacean-esque body. Legs and all.
He's just... going to drop that here in front of the building and get to actually breaking some meat out of the shell (or legs) that he can cook up for Yang and Ruby and, really, whoever else needs it.]
[ He's not acting like himself, and a part of Yang wonders if it had to do with the building, his memory... but no, even after that, he'd been able to smile. He hadn't been practically reclusive, like he is now, and when she hears noise (cracking, breaking) from outside, she's quick to step out there.
[So, there's probably been odd noises in the apartment all day. Scuffling sounds. Coming from overhead. After a while, Naoki started thinking it wasn't, in fact, their upstairs neighbours and set to searching about and found a surprise attic (??????) entrance and while up there...
Oh. Well, well.]
Hey, Yang?
[Calling down from the little way he found into the small space over their apartment.] How does Zwei feel about other dogs?
[That's about the best she can come up with for at least a few minutes. She wants to at least acknowledge Yang and let her know she's okay and that she's back, but she honestly has no idea what to say to her right now. How do you talk to someone who just went through what Yang did? A pulsing ellipsis haunts Yang's phone while Weiss repeatedly types something out and erases it almost immediately. Words of encouragement sound haughty, "cheer up" feels downright insulting.]
[It's during a moment when he slips into an unwilling doze when it happens-- Naoki jolts into wakefulness, holding his breath and staring forward in the dark space of the living room, the sun trying to break through the curtains. He hasn't been sleeping much, if at all, as though he'll miss something if he closes his eyes for too long.
That's impossible to mistake, though. He thinks. He hopes.
His heart lurches up in his throat and he rises unsteadily to his feet, looking toward the door (closed, he's just left both of their room doors closed all this time, as if unable to bear looking inside after the first day) before walking to it.
Naoki opens up the door remarkably timidly, when his first instinct is to just slam inside. But he's still not sure if his senses are lying to him. He's keeping his breathing quiet, straining, even though there's a definite feeling of presence here and he can see her in the bed (though he wouldn't put it past his imagination, to be honest)--] Yang?
[ It's... taking a lot to adjust, to go from one bed to another, and to have that instant of complete disorientation where her memories surge back, and she can remember that there had been so many people around her, beside her, things to be happy about.
She can't remember the last time she felt genuinely happy, and as she lifts her head and sees him in the doorway... it's not quite happiness that seizes her, or relief, just a simple thought that she needs him and he's right there and she's probably going to cry. ]
Naoki... [ She sounds weary, but her voice still trembles and cracks, and her vision blurs.
It may be clear that she's been through a hell of a lot since the last time he's seen her, bandaged stump at least one indicator. ]
